Community Involvement — NAWIC
The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) was founded
in 1955. Today it has over 5,500 members with chapters in 48 states
and two Canadian provinces. NAWIC’s objectives include promoting
education, contributing to the betterment of the construction industry,
and encouraging women to pursue and establish careers in construction.
In January 2002, Lake County Contractors Association informed JJH of
the chartering of a new NAWIC chapter, Lake/McHenry County of Illinois
Chapter #368. Several JJH women attended the chartering meeting and became
members shortly thereafter. JJH’s Jamie Shirling is the past president
for the Lake/McHenry County Chapter and the national co-chair for NAWIC’s
Block Kids program, a national building competition for children in grades
first through sixth. Jamie works with other members
of the construction industry to provide networking and educational
opportunities for its members. Some meeting topics have included construction
safety, industry insurance requirements, time-management, and organization
and communication skills. Some construction tours included Six Flags Hurricane
Harbor and the Gurnee Police Station.
