Overview

“Doing the work safely will give you a quality job.”
David Grum, Safety Coordinator

Safety is a prime concern at JJH. Our company has a very safe work environment as evidenced by our worker’s compensation modifier rate. JJH has a formalized safety program with a full-time safety coordinator on staff and a significant ongoing safety training program. The safety coordinator inspects all jobsites on a regular basis documenting the results in writing and photographs.

The JJH Safety Committee, headed by the safety coordinator, meets quarterly and is comprised of a company VP, project manager, superintendent, carpenter and laborer. The participants, except the safety coordinator, rotate annually providing an opportunity for different project managers, superintendents, carpenters and laborers to participate in safety committee meetings and decisions. Their primary function is to investigate and give feedback on subjects introduced by the safety director. They also review forms, programs and incentives, and offer suggestions on how to improve them.

The safety coordinator is in charge of the monthly Operations/Safety Training meetings, which are mandatory for all office personnel and field superintendents. All Superintendents receive comprehensive training, including OSHA training/certification assisted by Lake County Contractors Association and the Chicago Land Construction Safety Council, which help maintain a safe jobsite. All subcontractors are required to follow the safety guidelines set by JJH and must have a certificate of insurance filed with JJH prior to starting work at any jobsite.

Operations/Training Meeting

Safety is a priority for all JJH personnel from the president to the field staff which is evident by the number of safety awards received over the years. In July 2005, JJH celebrated a record 123,488 hours without a lost time accident. Safe jobsites are rewarded with a catered “safety” lunch and cake (of course).
